Lovely Words
From Anne Carson's Autobiography of Red:
AA
SYLLABICATION: a·a
PRONUNCIATION: ää
VARIANT FORMS: or a'a
NOUN: Lava having a rough surface.
ETYMOLOGY: Hawaiian 'a', to burn, aa.
One of the Yamana's variations of the word 'bite' meant "to come surprisingly on a hard substance when eating something soft e.g. a pearl in a mussel."
Don't ask me why I find these interesting--I just do.
